In what ways will computers surpass the human brain? Hopefully none!
In my opinion there will never be a computer that can truly surpass the human brain. As the years go by we continue to develop new technologies that help advance and improve our lives, but that’s the goal. If computers started to exceed our intelligence, they would no longer be as beneficial, and therefore unusable. It has already gotten to a point where computers can replace us in our jobs. However, for a computer to be programmed that advanced, there would need to be a programmer who is even more advanced to develop this technology. Even though computers can complete such tasks as “reasoning, learning and planning” they are still limited by simple formulas programmed into hem (Dickerson 116). They do not have the capability to actually think and comprehend the same way as humans do.
Does this make them smarter than us? I do not think so. I think Minsky’s contributions to artificial intelligence are great. Maybe he is right, maybe such advanced intelligence isn’t possible from our brainpower (Davidson116.) On the other hand, many equally as intelligent scientists and philosophers believe that such mechanical intelligence can not compete with the power of the mind (Davidson 116). Who is to say that a computer isn’t going to short out or process something incorrectly? Does that mean just because it is a computer we shouldn’t double-check its solution? If a human did an equation, we would check their answer, maybe even with a calculator. Just look at home dependent and trusting we are in technology. I think for this reason technology should be limited to assistance only.
Can computers replace us? Certainly. There are many situations in which computers are more reliable, trustworthy, and accurate. Does that make them the better choice? Not necessarily. In cases like the assembly line, there is just no comparison between the efficiency of technology vs. humans. In customer service jobs, computers just can’t calculate and respond to emotions like humans. There is no formula to interact with customers correctly. Minsky calls these computers more conscious, but how can a machine really be conscious (Davidson 116)? Does that mean when I hit the power button they pass out?
