What is an idea? What is a thought? Where do these things come from and why?
As humans are the most developed and intelligent mammals, we have developed the power to think critically and beyond the bounds of bare instincts. Since these thoughts are much more complex than our ancestors, we are evolving cognitively. I think an idea or thought is just a metaphysical creation that comes from our ability to produce a higher level of understanding. Our imaginative part of our brain is able to create these scenarios that develop into notions possibly as a hope, desire or reflection. Our capacity to comprehend and create new technologies is just another form of our brains innovation that exceeds any other creature here on Earth.
I think ideas and thoughts are what set us apart as individuals. They distinguish us not only from the less developed but from each other. Our mind is our path to success in today’s world. There is no way for anyone else to read our mind or steal our thoughts; it’s really the most private and protected entity. Thank goodness we do not reside in a world like in George Orwell’s 1984, where there are thought police for thoughtcrimes against the government. Our freedom of speech is protected by the enclosure of our brain. It is funny how this dystopian government in Orwell’s very advanced book prosecutes everyone for their thoughts because to me when you start censoring thought, you take away someone’s essence: which is obviously Orwell’s motivation and warning against totalitarians and invasion of thoughts.
All in all I believe that these non-physical formations truly identify us from one another. It is not the thoughts, values, beliefs and other transcending abstracts that we share, but the ones are the ones we keep to ourselves that really matter. When we move past the physical barriers and instincts into a whole new realm of opportunity we really separate from one another. I think that these “ideas” make us who we are not just to the outside world but also to our most intimate being.
